Third and final installment in the Star Wars blog post trilogy

Here is the best review I ever read about the Phantom Menace. This is from the site, Aint it Cool News, that I used to read frequently. I haven't been back to it in over ten years.

A little excerpt if you are too lazy to read the whole thing.

Speaking of Star Wars...

Up until last year I pretended that the new trilogy didn't exist. Now I can admit it exists only because this 70 minute review was created. This review was so cathartic that it almost makes up for the fact that the movie was created in the first place.

"Luke, a Jedi?"

In case anyone is interested this is the inspiration for the title of this blog, here is the clip from Return of the Jedi. Of course it is early enough in ROTJ that it feels connected to Empire Strikes Back which we all know is the best movie of the trilogy.

The Conference Committee

Liberals are in an uproar that despite negotiations and concilations to Republicans not one House Republican voted for the stimulus bill.  A more moderate, tepid form is almost certain to emerge from the Senate where the Republican minority has actual power and the real bill will be hammered out in Conference Committee.

Obama got his bill passed while seeming magnanimous in the public eye.  If he concludes that the Republicans are not acting in good faith a better bill can emerge out of the Conference Committee without the expectation of Republican votes.

The most important factor is will the final bill work?  If it does the Republicans will have hurt themselves for a generation.  If it doesn't Obama's reelection chances in 2012 will be endangered.

So after an initial effort at bipartisanship it seems that now Obama should simply focus on passing the best bill possible.  There is still plenty of time to do it.

McCain GI Bill Corollary

John McCain claims that if Iraq veterans are offered a free education after their first deployment to Iraq the army will suffer from decreased re enlistments and that this would weaken the army.

The corollary to this argument is that a college education must be much more attractive to soldiers than fighting in Iraq and thus we should not offer them this opportunity so that they will be forced to stay in the less desirable situation.

How is McCain's position not considered as not supporting the troops?

McCain's argument worded a little less artfully might read "don't reward the soldiers service with anything valuable or they might leave the miserable situation they are currently in."
